CEFCU recently had the pleasure of becoming a sponsor and visitor of the Champaign County African American Heritage Trail. The guided tour takes attendees through the history and contributions of African Americans in the local community — highlighting stories that have often gone unrecognized, and honoring those individuals and events that helped shape Champaign County. The experience includes thoughtful discussion and reflection, creating space for open dialogue and learning.
The tour emphasizes the importance of listening to local voices and understanding the community’s history to help inform meaningful progress today. Participants are reminded that positive change begins with a willingness to engage with complex and sometimes uncomfortable aspects of history.
For Kelsey (pictured above), the tour offered a meaningful opportunity to listen, learn, and reflect.
“This experience reinforced how important it is to listen to the stories people carry — especially from those who hold the history of our community. The Champaign County African American Heritage Trail is a powerful reminder that meaningful change starts with a willingness to engage with difficult truths and use that understanding to better serve and support our communities.”
— Kelsey Klopfenstein, Champaign Member Center Operations Manager
One powerful takeaway from the tour was the role Champaign County played in broader historical moments. For example, at least nine Black men from the area enlisted in the 29th United States Colored Troops during the Civil War — some of whom witnessed the announcement of emancipation.
The group also visited local landmarks and murals, including the striking “KOFENA” mural, which serves as a visual celebration of sisterhood, collaboration, and the balance between reflection and action.
The African American Heritage Trail is a beautiful celebration of a deep cultural and historical legacy of African Americans in the Champaign County Community — an impactful experience that CEFCU is proud to recognize and support.
